Optimization of a Product can take many forms, like minimizing weight whereas to still maximize strength, or minimizing the cost for manufacturing. Often we squeeze every last drop of the product by either removing a part or excluding every bit of extraneous material. These decisions are always engineering-driven, but we always keep the user and our end clients at the driving seat.
Analysis-Led design is a systematic approach towards Product development. Rather than the convectional product development approach, ALD maximizes the use of CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) aka Numerical simulations like CFD, FEA and E-mag.
Finding the Starting Point
We start of by establishing a thorough understanding of the product’s real-world requirements such as the environment in which the product is put to use, the type of external forces acting on it. In some cases we already have a specifications for a part or product, but most of the time we need to establish the applied forces by testing a mock-up or using a quick prototype to test in a lab and measuring what happens using instrumentation.
In some cases, we might take a similar product that’s commercially available and put to test in simulations to figure out how hard it can withstand the external forces — in what direction and for how long. This information shall give us the starting point to develop the concept of the product.
Pushing Products To Their Limits
CAE tools are indispensable for this kind of work, but in the end we always need to take it into the real world and check how the design performs. Thanks to all the great advances in numerical simulations, by utilizing FE and CFD simulations we can quickly and iteratively check the product or part performancein different critical versions and compare them. We will simulate a part, remove material, then test it again, and iterate that process until it eventually breaks. By this manner we would be able develop a more optimized and fail-safe product with less development time.
We can also simulate the part as if it were made with different materials, perhaps interchanging a weaker material for a more high performance light-weight material. By comparing different materials and their performance in simulations, lets us to identify and take real-time decisions on supply chain and manufacturing.
Real-world testing
Once we have fully defined and engineered the product with real-world conditions in mind, we have to quickly create different variants, thanks to advance in rapid prototyping technology, now we can quickly create a product and put to real world tests before tooling investments are made.
The subsequent tests and their results shows us the subtle differences between what you thought was going to happen and what actually happened once everything is connected together.
Only through these subsequent process in Analysis-Led design can the final design of the product be as good as it can possibly be.
